Spent a great day at Wai'ao today, and really enjoyed chatting with Garrett Ball, the proprietor of the Rising Sun Surf Inn, which happens to be the newest addition to the Taiwanease VIP Card Program list of participating businesses.

Garrett is from California, but now calls Taiwan home. He and his wife have opened a newly-renovated surfer's hostel in Wai'ao, Yilan County. It's dormitory accommodation, but everything is clean and new and the place looks great!

This is a picture of the women's room:

And this is Garrett himself, with some of the many girls in bikinis that always seem to be around!

Anyway, if you're looking for a quick break from Taipei, and don't want to break the bank, Rising Sun is one of the best deals around! And it's literally just across the road from the Wai'ao Train Station, so it's convenient, too! And if you're a Taiwanease VIP Cardholder, you get 10% off at the restaurant/bar/hostel as well as 10% off of surf lessons!

Not about the Inn, but is Wai Ao Beach right across from Wai Ao Station? This place looks great for singles but I don't think they'd appreciate the "band" turning up. Any other suggestions for families by the beach?

Yes, the non-lifeguard part of the beach is right across from Wai'ao Station. And they are pretty family friendly. This is from their Facebook Page:
Come out and bring the family on Thursdays and Kids 3-16 years old get 50% off on a bed.

星期四家庭日 3-16歲 50%折扣
加州海邊救生教練Garrett海洋安全常識免費小課程

Our surfing coach Garrett was a professional beach lifeguard in California for 6 years and will be here to give some beach safety tips on how to stay safe in the ocean.
我們教練Garrett (阿球)曾在加州海邊擔任6年救生員,
現在將提供免費的海洋安全小課程.

PLEASE HELP US TO SPREAD THE WORD TO FAMILIES!!
We remember being kids and enjoying the beach.
We would like to SHARE that experience with all the kids and teach them more about being safe on the beach and ocean.
I have been in Taiwan for two years and I notice people doing dangerous things around the ocean because they don't have the proper knowledge about the ocean many Americans learn as a child. Let's make the beach a fun and SAFE place with learning, instead of being forbidden!!

Had a great afternoon at the beach, and finished it with a couple of beers and a pulled pork sandwich at Rising Sun. They have a limited menu, and it isn't fancy by any means, but the food is good, the service is really friendly, and the prices are cheap. If you're going to be spending some time on the beach, this is a great food option that doesn't require another drive.

RSSI is a great place. Simple but good food, low prices, friendly atmosphere and a nice location! Definitely worth a visit!
