My School's account has just requested that I sign off a salary statement for last year. It seems straightforward enough, just a statement of earnings. But I am a little confused as he says that this is a new requirement for foreign teacher's to confirm their earnings with the police (I assume in this case he means the Foreign Affairs Police). Has anyone else heard of this?
The white tax slip they gave me had no tax deducted, although my school does withhold tax from me (at around 10%). I have been here for several years continually. I wanted to go and file my tax (I know it's late), so asked for them to return the tax I they had witheld, so I would have the cash with me at the tax office. I'm not worried that the school is under reporting. They are not. Quite the opposite.
Anyway has anyone else heard of this? Any idea what might be going on?
Sounds like simple miscommunication. The FAP have no interest in what you earn. They get that info from the tax office. I would suggest that you simply ask for a tax slip from your school. Actually, you don't even need that these days. Just go to the tax office, give them your ARC number and ask for a tax statement. SIGN NOTHING! from your school. SIGN NOTHING! SIGN NOTHING!

I own a school, and we don't have to report teachers's earnings to the police. It sounds strange to me.
Yes Sandman That's the line I normally take with the police in Taiwan. Sign Nothing. Which is what I immediately said to my school. " Police? Form? Why? No." However when I got there it was a simple letter, which I understood, just saying my name, the school address. Amount earned. I think that the police bit is a mistranslation. They must be referring to immigration/CLA. They are also re applying for my work permit, so maybe it's something to do with this. When I asked my boss about it she said that it was a) a new requirement b) designed to stop people saying they work somewhere, but not actually working there. I mentioned that made no sense. If you were going to get your mate's school to lie and say you worked there, then you would just sign a dishonest declaration. Now if it was an attempt to stop the rampant under reporting of tax by some unscrupulous bosses, that I could understand. Anyway, I suspect it's a new CLA requirement. Maybe you could check with your accountant Maoman? If it is a new requirement it's good if people can understand any implications after all.
Not a new requirement. They want you to confirm that your reported salary is as reported. That's all. It's also been SOP for years. If the numbers make sense to you, you can relax.
