New to Contact Lenses

Postby Lili » Tue Feb 14, 2012 20:51

Just got the time to go get a prescription for contact lenses, but while my Chinese managed to get me through the eye exam, the old couple didn't get the point that I had never used them before (or maybe I failed to mention it. I think thats the case actually lol)
I bought the Acuvue Moist 1-day lenses cause I figured they'd be easier to use and if I break them, who cares.

My friend will show me how to put them in and I have a few YouTube vids up.
Does anyone have tips?

Reminds me of my predicament when I first used Tampons. I had to just follow the instructions on the package. Wish there was a youtube video to guide me every step of the way  I mean does anyone remember doing things by just reading the instruction manual???
I wish them all the luck that accompanies such malevolence.

You didn't try any out at the optician? Normally you have to try them out, as not everyone can use contact lenses.
For example, I have one slightly uneven eye and as such soft lenses don't stay in and my only option would be a very specific (and expensive) kind of hard lenses. As such I decided to stick to glasses...

^Nah, like I said, I didnt mention it/lost in translation (or lack there of)

So far the problem I'm having is that the lens seems too big for my eye. I can't put it in directly so I'm going to try putting it on the bottom of my eye and then "rolling" it in. Hopefully that will work. I seem to remember my mom used to put hers in that way.

If they don't work, they dont work. I only got one set (1 box for each eye) so whatever.

the lens shouldn't be that big... a little surprising. just use index finger of other hand (not holding the lens) to pull up the eye lid. the lens (soft) should be roughly the size of the iris. With soft, it's rather easy. only advice is, always wash your hands, seems simple enough, but people do get infections for a reason.

i would try a few different brands at the optician as they do actually feel slightly different. Some feel more moist, some feel less intrusive (thinner plastic)

I don't have contacts anymore (woohoo laser eye surgery :bravo: ), but I wore them for a looong time.
To put them in, I would get the lens on the tip of my index finger, pull down the bottom lid (I'd use one of the other fingers on the same hand, but that might take practice) and just stick it in. To take it out, I would pull down the bottom lid and use my thumb and index finger to gently squeeze the lens and pull it out.

But there are different ways to go about it, as Jack and I illustrate. Find what is most comfortable to you.

Other tips are to have some saline solution on hand, to deal with any dryness issues (or dust, especially around here I'd imagine).
Try not to sleep in the contacts.
Get used to sticking your finger up there in your eye. When the contact is in, try moving it around a bit, just to get used to touching your eye.

My contact lenses had two different sides - they could get turned inside out, but they did not fit well that way. If yours are the same, then make sure you can recognize which side is which (mine had some kind of blue tinting that was meant to do this, and the shape was slightly different when they were turned inside out. Although I guess if you put in new ones every day, that is much less of an issue.

Ignore Divea, don't shove them up your privates. I tried to wear contacts and just kept squinting. My advice is just remember that your eyes are open all the time so they are highly durable. Approaching them with your fingers doesn't need to be something squeamish.
