Controls hidden in ridiculous, counterintuitive locations

Postby Dragonbones » Tue Nov 29, 2011 14:28

It doesn't make any sense. Outbox is not a logical subcategory of Inbox. Nor are Sent Items. New users will end up searching around for an Outbox link, before finally discovering by accident that mousing over Inbox shows it as one of the drop-down items. Change the Menu title "Inbox" to something rational, or don't use this. And why the heck are Profile and Board Preferences hidden under "Private Messages". Is a Board Preference a type of Private Message? Of course not!

I understand the attempt to streamline the options for a nice, clean visual appeal, but function should come first, and users shouldn't be left searching in frustration for the controls. Someone was REALLY not thinking when they put this part together.

The drop box shows your current location on the site. If you tap user control panel, you will notice it says 'overview' instead of 'private messages.' Same with the outbox/inbox side of things.

Buttons should lead to or do what they say, IMO.

You are correct in the fact that they need to be more clear in what they represent.... it is rather confusing.

Thanks for clarifying, though. :)

I would suggest representing the current location info differently and retitling the buttons. For instance, if while viewing new posts I click on the "0 new messages" button, the big red "View New Posts" changes to "User Control Panel". *That* is where I expect to see the current location info (which should read "Private Messages", not UCP). The button below it on the right should be the logical category (menu title) for what drops down under it. Since what drops down are all message functions, something like "Messages Menu" works much better than the word "Inbox". The button on the left says "Private Messages" but clicking on it counterintuitively drops down a menu of the User Control Panel areas rather than Private Message functions, so that button should be renamed "User Control Panel". And so on.

Ok, so (ten months later) will that get fixed?

Sure! It is on my massive to do list, but I can bump it up higher
