Guitar Shops in Taipei

Postby irishstu » Tue Jan 29, 2013 13:56

Hi all,

I was just putting together an up-to-date list of guitar shops in Taipei and decided I might as well post it here. If you know of any of these to be wrong, or want to add to any of them, please feel free to post. I may or may not update this first post with more info as and when I have it.

Also feel free to ask any questions or give feedback about the shops listed below.

Admin Edit: Each of the shops is listed in the Taiwanease Directory. Click on the name of the shop to go to each listing.

Dun Huang Music
Corner of Nanjing and Jianguo (well, about 10 metres north on Jianguo).
https://maps.google.com/?ll=25.052237,1 ... .8,,0,-0.8

Tony’s (AKA "ATB Music")
Tony's has two stores, as follows:

ATB Music, Neihu Store:
http://www.atbmusic.com/
文湖街88號 (88 Wenhu St)
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=%E5%8F%B ... 1,,0,-5.71

ATB Music, Heping Store:
http://www.atb2.com/
台北市大安區和平東路三段 2 號 (Heping E Rd, Sec 3, Number 2, right on a corner with Wolong St.)
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=%E5%8F%B ... QZCh9_ZE8g

Player Music
台北市金華街19號 (No.19, Jinhua St., Zhongzheng Dist., Taipei)
Best way to get there is go on the MRT to CKS Memorial Hall Station and exit at exit 3, then turn right to face the shop. It's right by the exit.
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=1F.,+No. ... .59,,0,4.4 (hopefully in that pic you’ll see Player on the left and exit 3 on the right)

SLS (Xin Li Sheng) Music
http://www.sls-music.com.tw/
台北市中華路一段78號 (No 78 Zhonghua Rd, Sec 1)
http://maps.google.fr/maps?q=%E5%8F%B0% ... 22,,0,4.51

Galaxy Music Company (AKA "Golden Ant Music Shop")
No. 37-1, Sec. 1, Jinshan South Road, Taipei ( located between Ren'ai road and Zhongxiao East Road, and the nearest MRT is Zhongxiao / Xinsheng station ). Tel: (02) 2357-8665
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=taipei&h ... 81,,0,0.76

UD (Up Down) Music
http://www.ud-music.com/
(No. 40, Lane 181, Zhongxiao East Rd., Sec. 4. Tel 02 2721 3202).
Note that this place doesn't open till 1 PM.

It’s REALLY easy to miss, so follow these directions very carefully:

Get off the MRT at Zhongxiao Dunhua, exit 1. Look around for the TKK fried chicken chain restaurant, which will be slightly to your right as you face the shops. Head there and turn left at it. Go up that lane until you are a block before you hit Civic Blvd. On your left at this corner, you will see a shop with a Teddy Bear and a “U” written on it. Go down the alley and a door or two down on your right is UD music (it’s a basement shop).

Do any of these stores sell used guitars?

I have the urge to buy an electric guitar but it's been about 20 years since I last owned one and I don't want to spend a lot of money.

Not a lot. And any that I HAVE seen have been overpriced. I'd recommend keeping an eye on the usual ex-pat secondhand market online places. They do come up from time to time.

Actually, I'll let you know if I see anything. Anything in particular you're interested in? And what sort of budget are you talking about?

Not too sure what I want yet. Budget would be under $10K, lower is better. I'm unlikely to buy for a couple of months so mostly just curious about what's available.

OK, I'll let you know what I see.

For 10K you should be able to get something pretty decent, especially secondhand.

Of course then you'll have to think about amplification.

Thanks to an unexpected photo sale I was able to buy a little earlier than planned. Went around the various stores and tried a bunch of different guitars in my price range and ended up liking the Epiphone Les Paul Special II the best. It felt the best for me in the sub-$10K range. Was also able to pick up a 12W Orange amp and get both for a touch over $10K at Player near CKS Mem Hall MRT.

Now to see whether I can actually remember how to play anything on it, after the past few years only with a cheap acoustic that didn't get much use and eventually got broken during a move.

I like the color of the amp. It makes me crave carrot cake. Or pumpkin pie.

Hi guys, that list is pretty reflective of what I've found online. I'm primarily an acoustic guitarist so know a bit about acoustics, not so much about electrics. Unfortunately it seems Galaxy Ant and Fantasy Music (in Ximen) are the only ones that sell decent acoustic guitars here in Taiwan. Galaxy sells Santa Cruz guitars (although the ones I saw were very old stock) and Fantasy sells Collings. Probably still best to import from the USA in my opinion and pay the 10% customs duties.

Click here for Da Ye Musical Instruments listing in the Taiwanease Directory

One more to add, and I really should've put this in initially.

Run by a guy called James, who speaks pretty good English. It's a very small shop, but you can tell he really loves guitars and knows a lot about them.
